We think primarily in language, and the written word is the most intimate form of communication.  When one writes, the mind focuses, and thoughts appear in words without distraction or ambience.  When one reads the writing of another, again the mind focuses, and the thoughts of the author become those of the reader.

The written word has a power that the spoken word cannot attain.  Sounds are transients and contain spontaneous inflections.  The spoken word is a blur to the mind and contains ambiguities that multiply as words fade into memory.  The spoken word can excite passions, but such sentiments are fleeting.  Who remains moved by Constantine’s speech to his legions before the Battle at Milvian Bridge?

The written word abides.  History becomes possible with writing.  Before letters, all is legend.  Civilization is built upon writing.  It is the foundation for the concept of “progress,” creating a storehouse of knowledge that passes from one generation to the next.

Only the written word provokes change in history.  The written word changed the Western world as the writings of the apostles disseminated.  The Codex Justinianus and the Codex Theodosianus form the basis for law in most of the Western World to the present.  The modern era begins with the advent of the printing press.  It is no coincidence that the Protestant Reformation and the Scientific Revolution followed the expansion of literacy.  Long has the world been divided between those who confide in the written word and those who adhere to myth and superstition.

No greater damage has been done to the mind than that caused by postmodern doctrines that doubt the intelligibility of all writing.  The text message and the emoji are the appropriate forms of communication for the postmodern world.  Clarity and permanence are lost as ambiguity reigns.

The world needs intelligible writing now more than ever.  This is our mission at Editorial Traslasierras: to help you write so that your words may abide.

Vigorous writing is concise. A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts.

Always prefer the plain direct word to the long, vague one. Don’t implement promises, but keep them.

Letters to Cbildren
The French call mot juste the word that exactly fits. Why is this word so hard to find? The reasons are many. First, we don't always know what we mean and are too lazy to find out.
